Six reasons to recognising when you need a new website

The great thing about websites is that they can always be updated. Using a website builder that is at the forefront of technology is best. This will mean you’ll have the ability to keep it running and updated for longer as the technology will still be there to support it. Some websites are built on outdated platforms and there comes a time when you do need a completely new website — here is how to recognise some of those signs.
1. OTHER WEBSITES LOOK BETTER THAN YOURS
As a web designer, I’m the first to say that a successful website isn’t just about how it looks, but that is a part of it. Your website needs to look modern, but it also needs to have a clear user journey and be easy for people to navigate. If you’re noticing your customers not getting in touch via your website, or getting a bit ‘lost’ when navigating it, maybe you should start to consider a redesign.
2. YOUR BUSINESS NAME HAS CHANGED
If your business name has changed you’ll need a new domain name. At this point, it’s probably a good idea to refresh your website. Don’t forget to set up your redirects so that anyone searching for your old business will get redirected to your new website.
3. YOUR WEBSITE ISN'T RESPONSIVE
Do you have a website that changes its layout depending on the screen size of the device it is being viewed on? (This is called a responsive website). If not, I’d recommend looking at updating your website as it could be putting off potential clients who view your website on a mobile or tablet. Responsive websites make your website easy to access on all devices.
4. YOUR WEBSITE JUST ISN’T WORKING FOR YOU
Maybe your website doesn’t have the flexibility you need to show off your brand. Maybe it’s limiting for you when it comes to the design or the features you can add. Looking for a new CMS can be a challenge. Look at the most popular ones and weigh up the pros and cons. I make websites using WordPress (with a premium theme) or Squarespace—both are great platforms and either one can be suitable for your business.
5. YOUR WEBSITE IS BUILT USING AN OLD PLATFORM
There are a lot of CMS & website builder platforms in the world so do your research when looking to build a website. Once you’ve bought your domain name, don’t fall into the trap of using the free website builder that the domain registrar offers you—it might not be the best solution for you and your business, and once you set something up it can be a lot of work to transfer it to a new, better, platform.
6. YOUR WEBSITE IS BUILT ON A LEGACY PLATFORM
If your website is built using a platform that hardly anyone uses, it can be hard to find website designers & developers that can or will help you to update your website. Ultimately you want to pick a platform that is popular so that you know, if you need a professional to help you with your website, you’ll be easily able to find someone.
